Naruto Shippuuden 263

After an extra long day of studying (and not showering due to the town's water being shut down for first half of the day -_-;; ), I was glad to finally take a break and watch ep. 263 "Sai and Shin."  Hinocchiiiii~~ ♥ oh, and Sakurai too :)  Love all these characters coming back, however brief their scenes may be.  Yeah, after this I think Sai will have just like...one more scene and then it'll be a few years of ninja war arc unless the anime team throws in more scenes for him.

Thank goodness the anime team handled this episode well.  I admit, the scene where Sai got pissed at Deidara had less "oomph" here than the manga did, but the non-manga flashback made up for it.  It's nice to finally have a clear explanation of what happened to Shin.

^^^ OMG how could they make young Sai so cute??  ♥   I mean, I love it, but it does NOT match up with the way Sai was first introduced to the story!! XD  When he first appeared, he was so off and truly didn't seem to have/understand emotions.  And even after he had his "first real smile", he was still reading books nonstop to try to understand emotions and all that awkwardness...so it doesn't make that much sense to have him so sweet and normal in these flashbacks from his childhood all the way up to what seemed like near-present time.

Here's something that didn't match up, for example. Early on when Sai just joined, he once said in a very casual, emotionless way, "My brother's already dead.  Maybe I should've tried to look like that? (referring to Naruto)"  and when Sakura asked what he meant, he replied, "Well, when my brother died, I wasn't sure what kind of expression I was supposed to make."

However, in 263's flashback, we saw that Sai CLEARLY knew "what kind of expression" to make.  I guess we're just expected to believe that Sai was THAT committed to fulfilling Shin's wishes and cut his emotions RIGHT then and there.  They should've at least made Shin's death flashback take place farther back into the past because Sai looked the same age as he does now.  Makes it hard to believe he became so emotionless and weird in just a year or 2.

Ok, I'm looking into it too much.

Either way, I still LOVED the flashbacks and the episode itself.  The extra lines they gave zombie-Shin before he "died" again made this scene have more impact.  The manga really didn't let him say much, making his appearance a bit blah.

Shockingly, Sasori's death, which never had any impact whatsoever on me both times he died (his first death and the second death in the manga which was in today's episode), actually drew a tear from me this time.  Must've been because of the emotional buildup of Sai and Shin plus that damn gorgeous soundtrack.

Naruto Shippuuden 249

I admit, when I first read these chapters in the manga, it was the first time a manga ever made me cry...so seeing it in the anime multiplied the effect so much.  Damn, I feel like I was crying for like 3 episodes...and the new piano BGM they used at the end just.  Killed.  Me.

MinaKushi....gaghhh I love them so much.

Sadly, after this onslaught of excellent episodes, this week's episode 250 was animated so crappily I won't can't even bother.

Naruto Shippuuden 246

The anime team worked magic with this episode about how Naruto's parents, Minato and Kushina, fell in love.  Not only was the animation stunning, but they tastefully filled in a few of the blanks that was in the manga, resulting in a whole lot of "awwww <3 "!

To top it off, young Minato was voiced by Irino Miyu (Haku from Spirited Away <3 )

I also really liked the extra scene they added before the rescue, in which Kushina beat up her bullies and then discovered Minato watching from a tree.  She yelled at him, accusing him of not helping her because she's an outsider, and then ran off before he could explain himself.  But then, after the rescue scene above, Minato explained that basically he didn't help her before because he knew she was strong.

I thought this was a great touch because in the manga, all you're told is that Minato never defended her from bullies -- until now, that made me think that before the rescue scene, he was either a wuss or just not very gentlemanly.  ^^;  Now I know he was actually just a sweetheart the whole time who respected her strength/pride. <3

This is probably the most romance I'll ever expect out of the Naruto series, so I'm happy it was handled very well :)

Animation comparisons

This week's Shippuuden episode about Sai was a lot better than I expected.  Thank goodness it wasn't the usual filler recipe of butting into a random filler character's life, or some other bizarre OOC situation.  It was actually a very calm, in-character, introspective episode of Sai having a couple of small encounters that make him think about his relationship with Team 7.

There were several flashbacks that were re-animated and re-recorded probably because:
1) they were from episodes when the aspect ratio was still 4:3, and
2) because some of them used to look like shit.

One of the flashbacks I was happiest with was the scene when Sai looked at Naruto and remembered his brother. I hated how the 2007 version inserted several made-up memories of Sai and his brother, after which he then quietly proceeded to draw. In this version, there aren't made-up memories, but instead a more believable moment of realization when he looks at Naruto, because he sorta gasps, and then he starts drawing. It's a small change, but it definitely made this scene seem more believable.

Aside from the improved animation, the re-recording also worked wonders for these scenes. I feel like maybe Hinocchi now has a better grasp on Sai's character and can portray him better than he did way back in 2007. I remember feeling a bit disappointed back in the scene when Sai remembered his brother because it seemed like a big emotional scene in the manga, but in the anime, was pretty...blah. It was really lacking something.

Originally, Hinocchi had performed those lines in Sai's usual flat tone, so it was like:
"I remember. This is what I wanted to show him. The picture of our dreams. ( ゚_゚ ) Now what's for lunch."

It's subtle, but this time, Hinocchi added more emotion and breathiness so you can actually tell that something changed in his character... So it sounded more like:
"I remember...! This is what I wanted to show him... The picture..of our dreams...! ( ゚▽゚ )" Lol okay, forget it, it's hard to describe these kinds of things ^^;;

Of course, aside from the refreshed flashbacks, the original content of this episode was great too.  It felt like a drama CD or doujinshi -- just a nice short story mostly about a character's thoughts. Much, much love to this episode's animation team and whoever wrote/directed it.   The new scene of Sai and Naruto's quick fight was awesome (but too short!!).  This episode's ending was actually pretty touching and I liked that it showed something important about Sai without having to completely spell it out for you (an example of such a case being in a recent filler where Naruto narrates his entire life/love story to the filler-character-of-the-day who probably didn't even give a damn about all the details.).

And that smile:

Awww, thank you, animation team! o(゚▽゚)o ♥

Now that that's over...

Phew, interview's over.  I was beating myself up over my lame answers, but there's really nothing I can do now except wait.  So, wait I shall.

Anyways, Halloween came and went pretty quickly.  Too bad it was on a Monday this year, so there were barely any trick-or-treaters to give candy to.  I meant to post on Halloween but forgot, so here's the pumpkin I carved.  Know who it is?

Sanji! (from Once Piece)  I should've taken this picture from a better angle so you can see his curly eyebrow.

Oh, today I watched Naruto Shippuuden for the first time in months.  I don't like fillers, but I heard there was some NaruSaku-ness so I checked it out.  It was filler-y, but that's okay.  I was more excited about the new OP because although it was totally goofy and full of WTH?!?, the nice animators gave us this:

♥!  CUTE!  I like.
Too bad at the moment of contact, it switched to the scene of Naruto hugging his dark side.  Tch.

And this scene was kinda cool, although it's 1000% not happening, EVER:

I mean, come on.  Flying, three-handed jutsu combo, AND some kinda chidori being produced?!
Mm hmm, ok. Looked cool, though.  Team 7 love!

I was happy to see more Sai incorporation into the new OP, so  I looked at the upcoming episode titles and saw that there will be an episode focusing on him in a few weeks.  Yay Hinocchi <3  This year started out with so much Sai coolness (which sparked my Hinocchi madness ^^;;; ), but came to a dead halt after the whole Sasuke reunion thingie...Boo~  I hope they give Sai more appearances soon since it's just silly filler episodes anyways.  In past filler arcs, they seemed to take advantage of that to build on his character, so hopefully they'll do so again.

The wait's killing me

Augh....it won't be long before the last chapter of Ouran's out...it's killing me...  Well, not that like I was left in suspense or anything since everything's pretty much wrapped up, but you know, it's hard to know that a series you've been following for years is going to end.   At least I feel pretty sure that it'll be a satisfying ending, unlike other series that ended in complete shit.... I'm too sleepy to elaborate.

Ughhh I wonder how I'll take it when Naruto and One Piece finally end.  Naruto I see happening in the next two or three years (if so, thank goodness), but I feel like One Piece may still hang around longer (again...if so, thank goodness).

Why am I babbling...time to sleep...

Oh yeah, but first...Yahiko x Konan.  I guess I saw it coming, but REALLY?  It's kinda cute, but why introduce it now?  It seems like the only time Kishi shows some good coupling hints is when one or both of the people involved are already dead or are about to die. D:

Summer's end plus some anime rambling

Well, feels like summer's pretty much over for me since he flew back to Michigan this morning... but I've gotta say it was an amazing summer.  Pillows concert, California Adventure, Disneyland, Anime Expo, Reno, parasailing in Tahoe, exploring San Francisco, lots of drinking and eating out and movies.... ahh it was hard on the wallet, but god it was fun.  One of my best summers ever.  Ugh, cried my eyes out last night and a couple of times today, but I think I'm good now.  Took out the frustrations at the gym cuz boy do I need it.  I WILL establish a routine and stick do it, dammit.

Anyways, this was a good summer for anime and manga too.  I will now ramble.

Just read Ouran ch. 81 today and OMGGGG I couldn't believe it.  Finally I shipped a couple that worked out beautifully!! I wasn't too thrilled about the excess blushing coming from both Tamaki and Haruhi in lots of scenes, but when Tamaki found her "weakness" I just exploded.  It was so damn cute and it's what I always wanted to see between them.  Totally worth the 2 (or was it 3?) month wait.  I'm sad there's only a few more chapters to go...

Naruto manga's been very sweet lately :)  Kushina's awesome, and MinaKushi has quickly become one of my favorite pairings in the series (I mean, it's one of the only legit couple it has...).  The anime's also been very kickass and I'm loving the additions to this Pain arc.

Last month I watched Toradora and got totally screwed.  I got so hooked on it and marathoned it in one weekend... I was a fool and rooted for a couple that absolutely should've worked out but DIDN'T for some retarded reason!!  Gaghh I can't get over it.  Right when it hit episode 19 or 20 then I was in pain watching them get ruined...episode...after...episode...  I wish I could wipe those last episodes out of my memory then I'd be completely in love with the series.

At AX2010, I saw the new Trigun movie and it was freaking awesome!!  It resparked my interest in Trigun and I rewatched the whole thing...gosh I love that show.  If only it could be re-done with the animation quality of the movie...  I also saw the second new Eva movie and it was just as amazing.  I LOOVE the tiny romance hints they snuck in there. Makes things sooo much more interesting.  GAHH what's with all these kick-ass revivals of old anime?  Dragon Ball Kai, FMA Brotherhood, Trigun, Eva...what's next??  (Please be Sailor Moon XD)

Yesterday I saw the One Piece Strong World movie and it was beyond words XD  It kicked SO MUCH ASS.  Animation was top notch, battles were ridiculously cool, plot was GREAT...ahh it was beautiful.

Naruto 476 = D:

Reaction to Naruto ch. 476:

Yeah, he kinda failed this week. I mean, come on, REALLY? After all the crap that's ever happened to him, he finally caves in because everyone's finally being reasonable after all these years of Sasuke's bullshit?  Weak.

A sharp contrast to One Piece 568  which was completely awesome and moving.  Aughh Aaaccee!! Luffyyyyy!!  What a great chapter to end the year with :D

yay some doujin

Haha so much for trying to update regularly. I'm starting to suck at this XD

Anyways, finally got a hold of some more Seiya x Usagi doujinshi that just arrived today.
